Recent News from Andy in Haiti...
Hi, everyone.
We've been shaking since yesterday afternoon...a crazy, unerving feeling. But our town has had no damage to speak of.
The saddest thing is that people all over the country have family and friends in and around the capital city. The phone lines are all jammed, as you can imagine. We've received news that one of our former teachers and one of our former students were killed when their house collapsed in Port-au-Prince. One of my 'little brothers' here (Jean...aka John) has a brother and three sisters in Port. We haven't been able to contact them so far. I visited their house on the way home in November, and I'm imagining it could be bad for them. Sadly, John has already lost his father and older brother in the past six years. His mom is in French Guyana. We're praying for good news from his family in Port.
I'll be in touch again.
Follow God.
ANDY
Praise God!! Andy, your family here at CLC is so glad to hear you are among the survivors of this deadly disaster, and that you are well. Now our prayers go out to the victims, family, and friends in Haiti who are suffering from this tragedy.
The earthquake that devastated Haiti Tuesday was the strongest temblor to hit the island nation in more than 200 years. The magnitude 7.0 quake caused tremendous damage that officials have yet to fully characterize, and the death toll may run into the thousands.
The shaking started on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 4:53 p.m. EST in the Haiti region, just 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince.
The Haiti earthquake occurred at a fault that runs right through Haiti and is situated along the boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates.
Aftershocks continued to rattle the capital of 2 million people as women covered in dust clawed out of debris, wailing. Stunned people wandered the streets holding hands. Thousands gathered in public squares to sing hymns.
Tens of thousands of people lost their homes as buildings that were flimsy and dangerous even under normal conditions collapsed. Nobody offered an estimate of the dead, but the numbers were clearly enormous.
The quake was felt in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, and in eastern Cuba, but no major damage was reported in either place.
With electricity out in many places and phone service erratic, it was nearly impossible for Haitian or foreign officials to get full details of the devastation.
Global Mission
CLC MISSIONARY SUPPORT IN HAITI
Christ Lutheran Church has a proud herritage of supporting mission work throughout the world, and is honored to introduce you to Andy Stump, serving as our missionary in Pas-Bwa-Dom, Haiti since July, 1992.

Andy serves the people of Haiti as Administrator and teacher for the "Help From Above" school in Pas-Bwa-Dom, and has been instrumental in developing the church associated with the school. Andy also serves as the church's director of music.
Andy was born into, and grew up in our congregation here at CLC. First attending our Sunday School program as a youth, then eventually serving as a teacher. "I grew in faith and understanding until I was a young adult. I was challenged to live out all that I was learning, and eventually teaching..."

Andy first felt God calling him to Haiti while attending an ELCA National Youth Gathering in Dallas, Texas. It was there where Andy was introduced to an outreach ministry called "Water For Life" - a program dedicated to improving the quality of life in Haiti by digging fresh water wells in the communities they serve, as well as developing schools and churches there. Having been trained as a school teacher, and interested in missionary service, Andy applied to spend one year serving "Water For Life" at a small school in Pas-Bwa-Dom.

That was in the summer of 1992. Andy continues serving this community in Haiti today, bringing new believers who live so far away into our family right here at CLC Dallastown. May God continue to bless Andy's efforts.
